Contrasting Fortunes for SMK Tabuan Jaya

KUCHING (22 April 2013) – It was a weekend of contrasting fortunes for SMK Tabuan Jaya of Sarawak. While the younger Under-14 team scored their third win of the season in the Minister of Education Super League, the older U17 boys fell to their third defeat this year.

Playing in Group A of the Ministry of Education League, the Sarawak youngsters fell to a 1-0 loss to the visiting SMK Bukit Nenas side of Terengganu with the only goal of the game coming in the 40th minute off Mustakim Hakimi Che Hakim.

What made the defeat worse for SMK Tabuan Jaya was the fact that the team has now slipped down to eighth in the nine-team standings and they have also picked up their second straight red cards in two matches.

And considering that this batch of players had made a big impression last year also points to the probability that something is not right with the squad.

“It is disappointing for sure where for our next game, we will not have the services of two players who were red carded,” said Helearn Wilfred, the chief coach of SMK Tabuan Jaya.

“I thought that we played well even when we were down by that goal. We played really hard and created a lot of chances. We just could not convert them. Definitely, we have to improve considering that we are almost at the end of the first round of the meet already.”

But while the weekend was a struggle for SMK Tabuan Jaya, the visiting Terengganu side seems to have brushed aside the overwhelming heat to chalk up their fifth win of the season.

SMK Bukit Nenas is sitting pretty at the top of the standings with 17 points from seven matches where they are two points ahead of defending champions SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah.

Chief coach Mohd Azhari Salim, who is on loan from Terengganu’s Super League side T-Team, said that what was important in the game was to play to tactics.

“Playing away is different from playing at home; we cannot play the same way. Things turned out the way we planned and we could not be happier with the three points,” added Mohd Azhari.

Over in Group B, SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis strengthened their position at the top even when they were held to a scoreless draw by SMK Za’ba of Negeri Sembilan.

In the Minister of Education Under-14 Super League, SMK Tabuan Jaya kept a close fight for a place in the next round of the competition when they beat SMK Bukit Nenas 1-0 with the only goal of the game coming off Zharif Yasin Nasruddin in the 38th minute.

Only the top six teams out of the eight competing teams will earn places into the next stage of the competition.

On the other hand in the U14 Premier League, the Under-13 team of the Gambang Sports School are still at the top of the standings even though they had the day off. They are now on the same points with SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis, who this week blasted SMK Za’ba of Negeri Sembilan 3-0.

The northerners scored through Muhammad Akmal Rozizi in the 4th minute, Zulfaqar Khairuddin Zamzuri (28th minute) and Muhammad Izhar Rafi (    43rd).
