F&N Beverages and Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang Launch Second School Recycling Campaign

Pulau Pinang (6 March 2013) – F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd returns after a successful partnership with Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP) to organize the second “Pertandingan Kitar Semula F&N Beverages & MPPP 2013” which will see schools from Penang Island competing for a share of the RM14,800 in cash.

Participating schools are required to collect recyclable items like aluminium cans, plastic bottles and paper for recycling. A new feature to this year’s campaign is the inclusion of e-waste, or electronic waste, which generally refers to items such as discarded computers, office electronic equipment like printers or fax machines, entertainment device electronics such as cassettes and video players, mobile phones, and even television sets.
Speaking at the launch, Ms. Cariessa Goh, F&N Beverages Corporate Affairs Manager reiterated the campaign’s objective to increase the level of awareness and promote the importance of recycling among schoolchildren, whilst instilling the recycling habit from young and encouraging them to spread the recycling spirit within the community.
“F&N Beverages continues to promote the 4R message that is, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink, but we also recognize another looming issue which is the increasing volume of electronic waste or e-waste.
“We introduced the e-waste category in this year’s competition because we hope this will help spark the change in our community to realize that waste reduction is indeed an issue we need to address and that recycling is one of the most effective practices we can adopt to lessen our waste,” Goh adds.
This year, Pertandingan Kitar Semula F&N Beverages & MPPP is also conducted in conjunction with the Green School Award 2013, an effort organized by the MPPP in response to the government’s call to raise awareness towards waste reduction and recycling among schools.
Schools who participate in the Pertandingan Kitar Semula F&N Beverages & MPPP will have the added advantage of scoring points for their recycling activities, as part of the judging criteria for the Green School Award 2013.
The three-month campaign will run from 18 March until 18 June and as in previous years, the competition is divided into two categories – secondary and primary schools.
For both categories, the schools with the most weight of recyclable items, based on the collection per head, will win the grand prize of RM1,300. The second place will receive RM1,100 and the third place RM900. The fourth and fifth place will receive RM800 and RM700 respectively.
Schools in sixth to tenth place will receive RM600, RM500, RM400, RM300 and RM200 respectively. Two Special Awards with a prize of RM600 each will also be given to the school, be it primary or secondary, which accumulates the most aluminium and plastic recyclable items.
The Company’s commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment, which is in line with the F&N Group’s ‘Go Green’ initiative to enhance green awareness and practices, has resulted with its predecessor campaign, “Kempen Kitar Semula F&N Beverages & MBSA” progressing from a recycling competition to a full-fledged community effort with the support of the Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), and currently enters its seventh consecutive year.
The launch of the campaign was jointly officiated by Goh and Dato' Patahiyah Bt. Ismail, president of Penang Municipal Council.
The winning schools will be crowned at a prize giving ceremony scheduled for end of June 2013.
