PETALING JAYA (22 February 2013) – SMK Seri Titiwangsa of Kuala Lumpur are chasing their first ever Charity Shield crown when they take on seasoned campaigners SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah in the season opener of the Minister of Education League Cup (MELC) tomorrow evening.

SMK Seri Titiwangsa will face two-time MELC champions SMK Tunku Anum at the Stadium Bolasepak Kuala Lumpur in Cheras with kick-off at 8.45pm.

Muhammad Shuaib Mohamad, the captain of SMK Seri Titiwangsa, said that even though there is a change in the competition format this year, he remains confident that his team is strong enough to beat SMK Tunku Anum in the Charity Shield and fight for the overall crown.

For 2013, the organizing committee of the MELC has decided to place the better ranked teams in the top echelon where they are now known as Liga Super KPM while the lesser graded teams in the lower Liga Premier KPM.

“There will no longer be easy matches for sure but we are confident as in the last year, we have built a strong enough team able to compete against the best in the league. And in the Charity Shield, we will be playing at home which should give us an edge,” said Muhammad Shuaib.

“We have been preparing since the start of last season actually, so the set of players that we have now is part of the continuing process that has been put in place by our coaches.”

Following the change in format, other than SMK Seksyen 11 and also SMK Tunku Anum, the other teams in Liga Super KPM are SMK Seri Titiwangsa (SSN Wilayah Persekutuan), SMK Mutiara Impian (SSN Pulau Pinang), SMK Bukit Nenas (SSN Terengganu), SMK Putera (SSN Kelantan), SMK Tabuan Jaya (SSN Sarawak) and also Sekolah Sukan Tunku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI).

There will also be a promotion-relegation system at the end of the 2013 season to make the league even more competitive.

Muhammad Zhafir Mohd Yusoff, the captain of SMK Tunku Anum, added that they have to be cautious in their campaign this year. He said that considering that they are the two-time champions, every team will be out to get them.

“It will be very competitive but I think that this is how it should be,” said Zhafir. “We are all excited about the new season and I hope that we can win the Charity Shield this year after losing it last year (to SMK Seberang Temerloh of Pahang).”

The press conference was also attended by Harmiles Daramin, the Principal Assistant Director for Ministry of Education Sports Division, Basirol Abu Bakar, chief coach of SMK Tunku Anum and Halim Ismail, the chief coach of SMK Seri Titiwangsa.

"We are changing the format in line with that of the FA of Malaysia (FAM) Competition to make sure that our league will be more competitive," added Harmiles. "And with the decision to make it more like a Malaysia Cup competition, we are quite confident that it will be."

The MELC and 100PLUS Super Cup are among several youth programmes and competitions supported by 100PLUS, Malaysia’s leading isotonic beverage.

The others include the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Golf Open and the 100PLUS National Junior Badminton Circuit. 100PLUS is recommended by the National Sports Council.
