PETALING JAYA (19 February 2013) – Diving queen Pandelela Rinong picked up her second SAM-100PLUS-KBS Athlete of the Year award in a glittering ceremony that was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek this afternoon.
In a voting process that was balloted by members of the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM) Pandelela – the winner in 2010 – beat world No. 1 shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei as well as world No.1 and seven-time world squash champion Datuk Nicol David (squash).
The other nominees for the same award were national bowler Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek, Malaysia's first ever AMF World Cup champion and medal winners at the Paralympics - Hasihin Sanawi (silver medal for archery) and Mohd Ziyad Zolkefli (bronze for shot putt).
“I’m deeply honoured to be given this award for the second time,” said Pandelela, who is currently away in China for a competition.
“It was a tough field to be in with other world class athletes. So for me to be recognized by the Malaysian sportswriters has made this award even more meaningful for me.”
For her effort in winning a silver medal at the Olympic Games in London last year, Pandelela received RM10,000 and a Crystal Trophy.
The other award recipients were national archer Haziq Kamaruddin for Best Young Athlete while cyclist Mohd Fauzan Ahmad Lufti grabbed the crown for Comeback Athlete of the Year.
100PLUS picked Moto3 rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin as the winner for the Out-Do Yourself award while the Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia was picked as the Most Dynamic Association.
In the journalism awards, Rajes Paul of The Star picked up the Grand Overall Award for her report entitled ‘Please Don’t Discriminate’ which came with a reward of RM7,000.
She was chosen as the best among six categories which included both the print and electronic media.
The Best News Report (Print) went to Haresh Deol (Malay Mail) while Rajes Paul of the The Star was chosen as the best in Commentary (Print).
The Best News Report (Electronic) award was picked up by Mohd Fadzrie Haziz from Sukan Awani as RTM’s Baharun Nurdalila Baharuddin won for Best Commentary (Electronic).
