Olympic Medallist Chong Wei and Pandelela Head Nominations for SAM-100PLUS-KBS Awards 2012

PETALING JAYA (5 February 2013) – World No. 1 shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Olympic bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong are among the candidates nominated by members of the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia for the SAM-100PLUS Awards 2012.
For the first time, SAM members have also nominated Paralympic athletes, shot putter, Mohd Ziyad Zolkefli, and archer Hasihin Sanawi for the prestigious awards which will take place on Feb 19.

The other nominated athletes are squash queen Datuk Nicol Ann David and bowler Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek.

“With the Olympics last year, it’s no surprise that the nominees are among the athletes who performed well in London. I am pleased that two Paralympic athletes have also been nominated,” said SAM President Ahmad Khawari Isa. “Chong Wei and Pandelela performed remarkably last year and have rightfully been nominated by our members.”
For the record, Chong Wei bagged the silver while Pandelela claimed the bronze in London. Chong Wei also won the SAM-100PLUS Awards in 2009 while Pandelela was crowned the winner in 2011. Last year, shooter Nur Suryani Taibi was voted the Athlete of the Year.
The list of nominees were revealed today by SAM Deputy President Asan Ahmad. Also present at the announcement today was Ms Cariessa Goh, Corporate Affairs Manager, F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd and Dato’ Kamal Harun, Consultant, F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd.
SAM, in collaboration with Malaysia’s No. 1 isotonic drink 100PLUS and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will host the awards function at the Hilton Hotel, Petaling Jaya.
The SAM-100PLUS Award is an annual feature in the Malaysian sporting calendar with the ‘Athlete of the Year’ set to take home RM10,000 in prize money while a special ‘Outdo Yourself’ award will also be announced during the SAM-100PLUS Award ceremony.
There will also be additional categories this year with the Most Dynamic Association award and also 'Comeback Athlete of the Year'.
Apart from recognising the achievements of athletes, SAM members themselves will also be rewarded for their invaluable work.
They stand to win a total of RM40,000 in cash prizes for the ‘SAM-KBS MEDIA AWARDS’ of which there are a total of seven categories.
The seven categories are for (1) best news report - print, (2) commentary - print, (3) best news report - electronic, (4) commentary (electronic), (5) special report - print & electronic and (6) best photography.
The Overall Award (Anugerah Utama) winner - who is chosen from the six categories - will take home RM7,000 in cash and a trophy while the winner of the six categories will each receive RM3,000 and a trophy.
