SMK Mergong Confident of Place in SemiI-Finals of 100PLUS Super Cup Champions' Schools

KUALA LUMPUR (3 Oct 2012): With defending champions SMK Chengal of Kelantan falling in the preliminary group stage of the 100PLUS Super Cup Champions’ School, SMK Mergong of Kedah is confident that they can go all the way when the quarter-finals of the meet begin at the University Kebangsaan Malaysia field tomorrow morning.

SMK Chengal finished at the bottom of Group A where they failed to win even one game or score one goal in two matches. SMK Mergong on the other hand, won Group B confidently when they beat SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah of Negeri Sembilan 2-1 in their first match yesterday and then overcoming SMK Seri Gading of Johor 2-0 this morning.

The northerners making sure of the full points with goals from Muhammad Farhan Roslan scoring the lead on 15 minute before Mohammad Aliff Ani added the other just before the break.

Naturally Basirul Abu Bakar, the chief coach of SMK Mergong could not be more than pleased with how things have turned out for his team this year.

“We will not be defensive (in the quarter-finals), that is not our style,” claimed Basirul. “We will play our usual attacking game although we know that teams at this stage are generally well-prepared.

“But we are confident that we can go all the way this year.”

Facing SMK Mergong would be former champions SMK Anderson Perak, the winner of Group A. The silver state side opened their campaign with a scoreless draw against SMK Chengal in the opener before drawing SMK Tinggi Kajang of Selangor 2-2 today.

In the other quarter-finals, SMK Tinggi Kajang will take on SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah while SMK Victoria of Kuala Lumpur will play SM Sains Tuanku Syed Putra of Perlis.

Completing the line-up of the best eight teams for the battle tomorrow morning would be SMK Telok Kumbar of Penang taking on SMK Sultan Abu Bakar of Pahang.

The four winning teams will then go on to battle in the semi-finals of the championship later in the afternoon.
