PENANG (1 Oct 2012) – SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah made it their second double in three years when the beat Penang’s SMK Mutiara Impian 1-0 in the final of the Minister of Education Under-14 League Cup at the City Stadium on Saturday night.

The northerners had also won the Ministry of Education Under-17 Youth League last week when they beat their counterparts from SMK Mutiara Impian 4-1. SMK Tunku Anum had won their first double in 2010.

“We were not under pressure as there was a certain sense of confidence in the team following the win by the U17 team last week,” said Hadi Salleh, the chief coach of SMK Tunku Anum.

“The field was not too good and the lighting was poor and that contributed to how both teams struggled throughout the match. But we are already preparing for next year even though 90% will be new players.”

There was plenty of end-to-end action in the first half, but very few scoring opportunities for both teams. The only shot at goal in the entire first 35 minutes fell to the home side in the 23rd minute.

Faisal Halim’s looping attempt from long distance almost caught the out of position Tunku Anum goalkeeper Asri Muhamad napping. But to his credit, Asri did well to backpedal in time to save the effort.

Asri was also lucky to be let off the hook in the dying seconds of the half when Mutiara Impian's Khairul Anas skied his shot despite being put through clear on goal.

Asri again took centrestage in the 44th minute when his attempted punch to clear a Mutiara Impian corner cannoned backwards towards his goal. Luckily for the keeper, his defenders were on the goal-line to scramble the ball away.

The home side took control as the match wore on but failed to make their dominance count in the final third of the pitch. And they were made to pay a heavy price by Khairin Irfan Kamaruzaman in extra time.

Just three minutes into extra time, Khairin was the first to react in the crowded Mutiara Impian penalty box to stroke the ball home after a Tunku Anum attempt off a corner had ricocheted off the upright.

It was a cruel blow to Mutiara Impian, who had twice hit the crossbar and wasted numerous chances to score during regulation time.

“There is nothing to be ashamed of as the players tried their best and this is the first time, they are playing in the final,” said Muhammad Rakhi Mat Saad, the chief coach of SMK Mutiara Impian. “We will just have to prepare better for next year.”
