Abang Nur’Afirman Hat-trick Drives SMK Tabuan Jaya to Comeback Win

KUCHING (20 May 2012) – A fabulous hat-trick from Abang Nur’afirman Abang Norazman drove SMK Tabuan Jaya of Sarawak to a fantastic 4-3 comeback win over SMK Seberang Temerloh of Pahang in Group A of the Minister of Education League Cup (MELC) 2012 yesterday.

In the match that was played at the SMK Tabuan Jaya Mini Stadium, the home team began strongly under the sweltering heat when Abang Nur’afirman slammed home from close range for the sixth minute lead. But the visitors fought back through Muhammad Zulhisyam Zulkifli (22nd minute) and a double from Muhammad Shah Amirul Zamri (24th and 33rd minute) to take a 3-1 advantage going into the second half.

And just when SMK Seberang Temerloh, the 2012 Charity Shield winners, thought that they had the points in the bag for only their second win of the season, Abang Nor’afirman found the inspiration to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 48th and 70th minute as Tay Wui Keong added the other in the 67th minute for the win.

“It was a very tough game for sure and the intense heat certainly did not help,” said the lanky Abang Nor’afirman. “We were a little worried at the end of the first half when we gave up our lead but we were a lot more determined on the day and that made the difference in the end.

“We just did not want to lose. We would have been happy with the one point but to win all three was fantastic.”

With the full points, SMK Tabuan Jaya have picked up 13 points from eight games while SMK Seberang Temerloh remained at the bottom of Group A.

“The players were a lethargic at the end. We had some problems with training in the last week and that was probably the reason why they could not sustain the pace for the whole game,” offered Rasdi Osman, the chief coach of SMK Seberang Temerloh.

“Definitely, there is an issue with team as after winning the Charity Shield earlier in the year, the team is just not playing as well as they should. We will have to revise and analyse what has gone wrong.”

While SMK Seberang Temerloh mull over what went wrong with the side that had beaten SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah for the 2012 Charity Shield, defending champions SMK Bukit Nenas of Terengganu maintained their winning run where this week, they overcame SMK Gunung Rapat of Perak 1-0 with the only goal coming off Rosfadhli Hafifi Osman in the 13th minute.

Over in Group B, SMK Tunku Anum close the gap on leaders SMK Mutiara Impian of Penang with a 2-1 away win over SMK Seri Kota of Melaka. Mohd Firdaus Abdullah gave the northerners the lead on 31st minute before Mohd Syafiq Ahmad added the second goal six minutes later.

SMK Seri Kota’s only goal in the game came deep in injury time from Muhammad Azwan Azhar.

Leaders SMK Mutiara Impian, who fell to their first defeat of the season last week, could only pick up a single point when they held SMK Seri Titiwangsa of Kuala Lumpur to a 1-1 draw.

It was SMK Seri Titiwangsa who went ahead first when Muhammad Amirul Ashraf Ariffin grabbed the lead on 44 minute. But SMK Mutiara Impian fought back with the equalizer in the 59th minute off Mohd Faisal Abdul Halim.
