KUALA LUMPUR (15 April 2012) – In what was the top of the table clash in Group B of the Ministry of Education Under-17 Youth League yesterday, SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah and SMK Mutiara Impian of Pulau Pinang battled to a 1-1 draw at the Tunku Anum Mini Stadium in Jitra.

The two northern sides have been the most devastating teams thus far in the new season where after only four matches; the two have knocked in a total of 29 goals between them.

And while there was an expectation that the clash will be nothing short of explosive, the 1-1 draw at the end seemed to be a fair result with SMK Tunku Anum getting the lead on 39 minute through Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad that was later cancelled out by Muhammad Jafri Firdaus Chew in the 74th minute.

“We created a lot of goal-scoring chances but we made far too many mistakes. And defensively, we should be more composed at the back,” quipped Mohd Zaini Othman, the chief coach of SMK Tunku Anum’s U17 team.

“We have to improve for our next match where we cannot make the same mistakes against Bukit Jalil next.”

Countered Noraffendi Talib, the chief coach of SMK Mutiara Impian: “we so desperately wanted to avoid defeat and it is for that reason, we put in an extra striker in the second half.

“And it paid off with the equalizer. I thought that we were a little bit defensive playing against Kedah. But at least we are still undefeated and that is important.”

With the one point, it was enough for SMK Tunku Anum to take over the top spot in Group B from Melaka’s SMK Seri Kota, who fell to a 3-0 loss to SMK Putera of Kelantan in Kota Batu. SMK Mutiara Impian are placed third in the group.

In Group A, SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis maintained their perfect record of three wins out of three matches where this week, they edged SMK Gunung Rapat of Perak 3-2 with the winning goal coming off Mohd Saifuddin Salim right at the death.

Second at the table is SMK Seberang Temerloh of Pahang who beat SMK Bukit Nenas of Terengganu 4-2.

In the meantime in the Minister of Education Under-14 League Cup, SMK Mutiara Impian continued their winning ways in Group A when they scored their fourth win on a trot by beating former champions SMK Tunku Anum 2-1.

SMK Mutiara Impian took the lead through Muhammad Faiza Abdul Halim in the 34th minute before SMK Tunku Anum levelled the score in the 40th minute through Mazlan Mohamad.

But with a minute remaining on the clock, SMK Mutiara Impian grabbed the winner when Mohamad Aminur Azmi curled in his free kick over the five-man defensive wall to the top hand right corner of the Kedah goal.

“We are really overjoyed with this win as we have been looking forward to winning a game here in Kedah for a long time,” said chief coach Mohd Rakhi Mat Saad afterwards.
