PULANG PINANG (8 April 2012) – Mohamad Azreen Haikal Roslan’s header in the second half of a tightly contested affair gives SMK Mutiara Impian of Pulau Pinang a well-deserved 1-0 win over SMK Putera of Kelantan in Group B on the third match day of the Minister of Education League Cup 2012 yesterday.

The win was SMK Mutiara Impian's third full points of the season after beating SMK Peter Mojuntin of Sabah 6-0 in their first game before beating SSM Bukit Jalil 3-1 in their second game last week.

“We were a bit anxious to score in the first half and that was probably why we could not find the back of the net. But we improved in the second half and I got my fifth goal of the season,” said a clearly delighted Azreen after the match.

And this week, the game was very close to say the least as the side from Kelantan put up some fierce resistant to tie the match scoreless at the end of the first half. But the islanders finally broke the deadlock in the 49th minute of play when off Muhammad Nabil Ramlee corner from the left saw Azreen heading in the winner at the near post.

As SMK Mutiara Impian strengthened their position at the top of Group B, the loss for the side from Kelantan was their second in three matches.

“We lost because the players were not concentrating throughout the match. They just lacked focus and this is something which we need to remedy before our next game at home,” said Mahadi Hassan, the chief coach of Kelantan.

Elsewhere in the group, former champions SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah moved up to second in Group B when they beat SMK Za’ba of Negeri Sembilan 2-0 - off goals from Muhammad Farez Aiman Marzuki in the very first minute of play and Mohamad Aizat Safuan Razali in the 67th minute.

On the other hand, SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin of Sabah picked up their first three points of the season with a 2-0 win over SSM Bukit Jalil, courtesy of a brace (7th and 33rd minute) from Arisdius Jais. The win has lifted SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin out of the bottom of the table.

In Group A, SMK Gunung Rapat of Perak grabbed the lead for the first time this year when they beat SMK Tun Hussein Onn of Johor 3-1. The side from the silver state took a 2-1 lead at the break with goals from Ameer Faeez Zainal Ariffin in the fourth minute and Mohammad Shafaiq Abdul Malek in the 22nd minute as P. Manosh scored the only goal for the southerners on 27 minute.

Ameer then completed the win with his second and SMK Gunung Rapat’s third goal of the game in the 64th minute.

And while defending champions SMK Bukit Nenas of Terengganu picked up their second win in two matches when they beat SMK Seri Titiwangsa of Kuala Lumpur 1-0 off Muhammad Adhar Husin’s goal in the fourth minute, misery seemed to continue for SMK Seberang Temerloh of Pahang.

The 2012 Charity Shield winners conceded their third defeat on a trot when they fell to a 3-1 loss to SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis.
