KUALA LUMPUR (1 April 2012) – Defending champions SMK Bukit Nenas of Terengganu got their title defence on the right note when they picked up their first win in Group A of the Minister of Education League – 100PLUS Cup 2012 with a close 1-0 win over Johor’s SMK Tun Hussein Onn in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu yesterday.
Having had the day off from the first match day last week, the side from the east coast absorbed the early pressure from the visiting southerners before scoring their only goal of the game in the 24th minute off Mohd Zulkhairi Mohamad.
“The important thing was the one point,” said Norizan Mohamed, the team manager of SMK Bukit Nenas. “The game was very close and considering that we are using about 80% new players, we cannot be more than pleased with the result.
“We are determined to defend the title we won last year but we also know that everyone will make it tough for us. So I told the boys to just play for the moment. Our only concern is the strike force; they will need to work harder as the season progresses.”
The win for SMK Bukit Nenas has just set a perfect showdown against the current leaders of Group A, SMK Seri Titiwangsa of Kuala Lumpur, who this week won their second game in two matches when they demolished SMK Seberang Temerloh of Pahang.
The loss for SMK Seberang Temerloh was their second in two matches to at once downplay their win of the Charity Shield at the start of the new season.
The side from Pahang came up short against the city boys when Mohamad Irfan Hasnusan nailed a brace (12th and 55th minute) for the win.
In the meantime in Group B, SMK Mutiara Impian of Penang showed their class with a 3-1 win on the road over SSM Bukit Jalil. Two goals in the first ten minutes off Muhammad Hidayat Ruzi (2nd minute) and Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim (9th minute) set the tone for SMK Mutiara Impian as they then added the third goal of the game in the 32nd minute off Mohamad Azreen Haikal Roslan.
The only goal for SSM Bukit Jalil came in the 35th minute from Wan Alif Aiman Ismaidi.
