GAMBANG (18 March 2012) – SMK Seberang Temerloh of Pahang lifted the Charity Shield for the first time in their history when they beat SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah 3-2 in a pulsating tie that was played at the Gambang Sports School last night.

For SMK Seberang Temerloh, the win was their first victory from their first ever appearance in the Charity Shield while for Tunku Anum, it was their third defeat following losses in 2009 and 2011.

It came as no surprise then that following the win last night Rusdi Osman, the chief coach of SMK Seberang Temerloh, is aiming for bigger things this season.

“Of course we are very happy to win this Charity Shield but for us, the bigger target this year should be winning the overall league title,” said Rusdi. “From the game, the boys showed that they can be competitive and these are the qualities which we need to bank on against the more established teams.”

Countered Abdul Hadi Salleh, the chief coach of SMK Tunku Anum: “I can’t complain of the performance of my boys. There’s still a long way to go to the end of the season but obviously we must improve from here.”

Playing at the new spanking new facility of the Gambang Sports School, the attendance of Dato' Sri Abdul Ghafar Mahmud and also Puan Cariessa Goh, the Corporate Affairs manager with F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn. Bhd, prodded the early action.

As expected, it was SMK Seberang Temerlohwho dictated the early pace as, buoyed by the slightly more than a thousand supporters at the mini stadium.

But while they were confident pushing forward, it was to be SMK Tunku Anum who grabbed the lead in the sixth minute when Mazlan Mohamad punished some lackadaisical defending in the part of the home team.

But with Mohd Shahrul pulling the strings from midfield, it did not take SMK Seberang Temeloh long to find the equalizer when Shahibul Qayyum Fadhillah slotted home from close range on 19 minute before Mohd Shahrul gave them the lead just four minutes later.

The score at the half was 2-1 to SMK Seberang Temerloh’s advantage.

The side from Kedah was quick to find their second goal in the 36th minute off Mohd Firdaus Ismail to put both teams on level terms. But in the end, it would seem that Mohd Shahrul has the final say in the game when he nailed the winner in the 65th minute to land their first silverware of the season. “It was a fabulous night of football from our youngsters and I would like to thank our main sponsor 100PLUS in being our partner to develop football in the country,” said Dato' Sri Abdul Ghafar.

“This tournament has shown that we are on the right track to developin our players.”

The league proper will begin on 24 March 2012. For the record, no team has been able to win the league title twice since the league’s inception in 2008.

SMK Seksyen 11 from Selangor were the winners in 2008 with Bandar Penawar Sports School (now known as Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School) winning it a year later. In 2010, the title went to SMK Tunku Anum from Kedah as SMK Bukit Nenas from Terengganu were crowned champions in 2011.

The MELC and 100PLUS Super Cup are among several youth programmes and competitions supported by 100PLUS, Malaysia’s leading isotonic beverage.

The others include the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Golf Open and the 100PLUS National Junior Badminton Circuit. 100PLUS is recommended by the National Sports Council.
