F&N Beverages & MBSA Empowers Young Minds to Play an Active Role in Environment Preservation

F&N Beverages and Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) are once again out in full force to promote environment preservation through the 4R philosophy as they enter their eighth-consecutive collaboration in organising the ‘Kempen Kitar Semula’ for school children.
The three-month long campaign which is supported by the Department of Education Selangor, will run from 2 April till 2 July, 2014 with the participation of primary and secondary schools, and for the very first time, kindergartens under the MBSA administration. The much anticipated campaign challenges participants to collect the largest haul of recyclable materials, i.e. aluminum, plastic, and paper, and gain rewards.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Cariessa Goh, Corporate Affair Manager of F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd, announced the company’s intention to expand the campaign to a wider audience and bring the message of recycling to a new age group, hence the inclusion of the kindergarten category this year.
“The success of this campaign lies squarely on the children continuing to practice the 4R philosophy and growing the circle of adopters within their families and the community,” she said, while shedding light on the rise in environmental issues faced by the country.
“Half of our rivers; which are our source of drinking water, are polluted. Moreover, we are currently facing drastic changes in our weather conditions, from flooding to most recently, droughts and hazardous haze conditions. These are reflections of the effects of irresponsible environmental practices at our doorsteps,” she added.
After seven years running, F&N Beverages is confident that the children who took part have taken the values of 4R – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink – to heart and have applied these in their daily lives. To date, the campaign has collected almost 750,000kg of recyclable materials.
This year, primary and secondary schools with the highest average score of recyclable items collected at the end of the campaign will each win the grand prize of RM1,500. The second prize is RM1,300 each while for third place RM1,200 each. Fourth and fifth places respectively earn RM1,100 and RM1,000 each for their efforts. Sixth to tenth placements will receive a consolation prize of RM200 each.
Winners for the kindergarten category will receive RM300 as the grand prize, while first and second runners up will be awarded RM200 and RM100 respectively. Fourth to tenth placements will each receive a consolation prize of RM50.
The campaign also includes special awards whereby the school (primary or secondary) that accumulates the most aluminum and plastics materials will earn RM600 for each category.
F&N’s supplier, Tetra Pak (M) Sdn Bhd has also come on board to support the initiative by generously offering cash prizes for the highest collections of Tetra Pak recyclable items. Top primary and secondary schools will receive RM600 each while the champion in the kindergarten category earns RM300.
Last year’s campaign saw SK TTDI Jaya clinch the title for the fifth year in the primary school category while newcomers; S.M.K. Seksyen 24 took the crown for the secondary school category.
The 2014 campaign was officially launched by Datuk Bandar Shah Alam, Dato’ Haji Mohd. Jaafar Bin Haji Mohd Atan. It will conclude with a prize giving ceremony.
“Educating the public to adopt a responsible attitude and play an active role in tackling these environmental issues is absolutely crucial. And that’s exactly what the F&N group aims to do!” said Cariessa Goh.
In its commitment to protect the environment, the F&N group has established benchmarks internally to evaluate and monitor every aspect of their business and its impact to the environment. The company makes a conscious effort to manage its consumption of resources conscientiously.
