Shah Alam, Selangor – Leading soft drinks manufacturer F&N Beverages Marketing (F&NBM) brought Lunar New Year cheer and happiness to residents of two homes for the underprivileged, Rumah Sejahtera Bukit Baru in Malacca and Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng in Kuching, Sarawak, ushering in the New Year in festive style.
The celebrations were held as part of F&NBM’s community relations efforts in spreading festive joy and sharing the Company’s good fortune with the less privileged. This year’s celebrations marked the twelfth consecutive year F&NBM has held Lunar New Year celebrations with homes for the elderly and underprivileged.
The first celebration with Rumah Sejahtera was held on Tuesday, 11th February 2014. Founded by Dato’ Tan Cheng Sui in 1963, the home takes care of senior citizens of all races who do not have the means to support or care for themselves.
The festivities kicked off with a karaoke session, courtesy of F&NBM, which proved to be a big hit with the 30 residents as they sang their hearts out to Chinese, English and Malay songs.
Following the karaoke session, Ms Cariessa Goh, Manager, Corporate Affairs, F&NBM and Mr. Goh Eng Hua, Region Manager – South, F&NBM presented Rumah Sejahtera with medical kits, standing fans, a Panasonic air-conditioner for the home’s clinic and a PA system complete with rostrum.
The residents and guests were then treated to a delicious lunch by F&N Beverages, complete with the traditional tossing of yee sang. During the lunch, Senior Management of F&NBM presented the residents with F&N products, mandarin oranges and ang pow packets.
“The peace and success we enjoy today in Malaysia are the results of the hard work put in by our previous generations. This luncheon is not only to mark the Lunar New Year but also to pay our respects to you all, for your part in developing the country to what it is today,” said Ms Cariessa during her welcoming address. “We hope that you will pass your wisdom on to the next generation and help to imbue them with the values that helped shape you as people and the country.”
“Chinese New Year is an important celebration, for it is at this time that families come together to share their warmth and laughter and catch up with each other’s lives. It is unfortunate that many of the elderly residents of this home do not have the opportunity to take part in these festivities. We are grateful for F&N Beverages for coming forward and spending New Year’s with the residents of our home, as they have done in previous years,” said Datuk Kian Sit Har, Chairman of Rumah Sejahtera Bukit Baru.
Following the Malacca celebrations, F&NBM brought festive cheer across the South China Sea to Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng in Kuching, Sarawak, on the 13th of February 2014, the third time the Company had organized a Lunar New Year celebration for the home.
The 25 residents were treated to complimentary haircuts, courtesy of Rick Nah Hair Studio and Broove Hair Studio. Mr Kueh Thian Hee, Deputy Region Manager, F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn. Bhd., Sarawak then presented the home with gifts as well as ang pows and basic necessities to the residents.
Following the gift presentation was a delicious lunch, where the residents enjoyed the tossing of the yee sang, led by Mr. Kueh and Dato’ Sri Tay Thian Siong, Chairman of Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng.
“One of the initiatives we undertake is celebrations with certain communities during the many festivals in Malaysia. We are privileged as Malaysians to be able to enjoy so many festivals, but there are always those who get left out. This is where we want to come in, to be with these communities and share in the spirit and joy of the festival with them,” said Mr Kueh. “That is why we are here today, to spend this special occasion with you and to recognise your contributions to your families, your community and your country.”
“Thanks to the generosity and contributions by F&N Beverages, the old folks at our home will have a good start to the new year,” said the Chariman of Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng, Dato’ Sri Tay Thian Siong. “The gift of ang pows is something the old folks at our home really look forward to, as they are each given a small amount for pocket money each month, and these ang pows will help them with their daily needs.”
Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng, established in 1956, is also charity organisation that depends solely on public donations, and provides food and shelter to the poor and homeless elderly folks.
F&N, the leading soft drinks manufacturer in Malaysia, also organises various community initiatives during other festive occasions. The Company has also implemented other educational and development programs for the underprivileged across Malaysia, including the setting up of the F&N Sensory Integration Room in schools to cater to special needs students and F&N Sudut Iqra to encourage reading amongst schoolchildren.
